About Us

The  Centre   for  Sri  Aurobindo  Studies (CSAS) has  been  set  up  under  the  UGC  scheme of ‘Epoch- Making  Social  Thinkers  of  India ’ in  January,2005  at  the  department  of  philosophy, Jadavpur  University, Kolkata, India.

The  Centre  for  Sri  Aurobindo Studies  focuses  upon  the  holistic, interdisciplinary  approach  to  the  thoughts  of  Sri Aurobindo, one  of  the  very  important  thinkers  and  social  leaders  whose  thoughts and  actions   have  left  a  lasting  influence  on  the development  of  modern  India  and  on  contemporary  world  as  a  whole. As  one  of  the  masterminds  of  India, the  rare  genius,  the  synthetic  comprehensiveness  of  his  outlook  demands  a  closer  acquaintance  with  his  thoughts  and  ideas  and  a  deeper  exploration  into  these. Sri  Aurobindo  was the  leader  of  india’s  Nationalist  Movement, a  philosopher, a  poet, a  humanist  with  a  transcendental  outkook, a  Yogi – all  harmoniously  blended  into  his  outstanding  personality.

The  National  council  of  Education  was  created  in  1906  by  leaders  of  the  Nationalist  Movement, including  Sri  Aurobindo, Rabindra  Nath  Tagore, Bepin  Chandra  Pal, Surendra Nath  Banerjee  among  others. These  pioneers  had  not  only  vision  of a  free  India,  but  they  recognized  that  India  could  flourish  only  if  its  cultural  foundation  was  nurtured  through  a  system  of  National  Education. Sri  Aurobindo  was  the  first  Principal  of  Bengal  National  College, which  was  affiliated  to  the  National  Council  of  Education, Bengal.

By  establishing  a  Centre  for  Sri  Aurobindo  Studies  the  department  of  Philosophy, Jadavpur  University  pays  a  tribute  to  Sri  Aurobindo, not  only  as  an  outstanding  thinker  and  philosopher, but  also  as  one  of  the  eminent  founders  of  the  National  Council  of  Education, Bengal, which  is  the  parent  organisation  of  Jadavpur  University.
