The Centre for Sri Aurobindo Studies (CSAS) has been set up under the UGC scheme of ‘Epoch- Making Social Thinkers of India ’ in January,2005 at the department of philosophy, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India.
The Centre for Sri Aurobindo Studies focuses upon the holistic, interdisciplinary approach to the thoughts of Sri Aurobindo, one of the very important thinkers and social leaders whose thoughts and actions have left a lasting influence on the development of modern India and on contemporary world as a whole. As one of the masterminds of India, the rare genius, the synthetic comprehensiveness of his outlook demands a closer acquaintance with his thoughts and ideas and a deeper exploration into these. Sri Aurobindo was the leader of india’s Nationalist Movement, a philosopher, a poet, a humanist with a transcendental outkook, a Yogi – all harmoniously blended into his outstanding personality.
The National council of Education was created in 1906 by leaders of the Nationalist Movement, including Sri Aurobindo, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Bepin Chandra Pal, Surendra Nath Banerjee among others. These pioneers had not only vision of a free India, but they recognized that India could flourish only if its cultural foundation was nurtured through a system of National Education. Sri Aurobindo was the first Principal of Bengal National College, which was affiliated to the National Council of Education, Bengal.
By establishing a Centre for Sri Aurobindo Studies the department of Philosophy, Jadavpur University pays a tribute to Sri Aurobindo, not only as an outstanding thinker and philosopher, but also as one of the eminent founders of the National Council of Education, Bengal, which is the parent organisation of Jadavpur University.
Objectives of the Centre
• To carry on intensive studies and researches on various aspects of Sri Aurobindo’s thoughts.
• To acquaint students, teachers and general public with thoughts and activities of Sri Aurobindo.
• To comprehend Sri Aurobindo’s thoughts in the light of thoughts of other important thinkers of India and abroad. Theoutlines of Sri Aurobindo's thought would cover the following areas as under:
